Ok, so here's my dilemma. I just got tickets to go see A Dog's Breakfast in Vancouver, BC. David Hewlett will be there along with his fiance and his dog. I am really, really looking forward to this. Now here's the dilemma: The show is on Sunday at 1215pm. I have to work Saturday until 10pm. If I work Saturday and leave after work, I won't get to Vancouver until about 5 in the morning. Or, I could leave here at 3 in the morning to get there on time. Why don't I call in sick? Because I have been told that if I call in sick one more time, they might fire me. See? Dilemma. Some of you might think it's a no-brainer - lose job, don't go. But I really don't like my job, hate it in fact. The hours suck, I never have time to do my homework, and I'm exhausted. On the other hand, it gives me some extra money so I can pay my bills, and I have health insurance now. But....I hate my job. And I already bought the tickets. If I drive up Saturday day, then I won't be driving at night, can stay in a hotel, see the show and then drive home afterward rested and alert.
Or should I just call the tickets a bust and not go at all, even though I am so excited I could spit and really, really, really want to go? I just don't know. I'm really leaning towards the just call in sick and to hell with Walmart option, but any input would help. Also, I just found out that I can get health insurance through the school or privately, but it's really expensive. Sooooooo....any suggestions? The show is on the 25th of this month, so I have about a week to make a decision. Help me, Flist, you're my only hope!

PS This is totally, completely, 100% off topic, but does anyone know where I can get a copy of Robyn Thurman (Koschka's) Real Ghostbusters stories? I am tearing my hair out trying to find them. Thanks!

Just *how* badly *do* you hate your job? That's the real question, and you are really the only one to answer it.

If you aren't ready to sacrifice the job, would they allow you to "switch" your schedule with someone else? Someone you could later owe a favor to? Some retailers don't mind as long as the shift is covered and no one has overtime. I don't know about Wally World.

I can try to do the switching, but the only problem is the days I have off I have off because I have school, so I couldn't work for someone unless I took over a day shift for someone. Right now I just don't really know what I am going to do. Gah.

I haven't a clue what "A Dog's Breakfast" is, but isn't there any way to see it closer than Vancouver? In any event, not knowing any details, I personally would hate to jeopardize a job and health insurance. But... it sounds as if you're weighing the pro's and con's, and will make an informed decision.

"A Dog's Breakfast" is an Indie film, and you can only see it through private screenings. The tickets are almost impossible to get because the sell out almost as soon as they go on sale.
I don't want to risk this job, but I have to consider that Walmart makes no consideration for my back, and constantly tries to give me more hours than I can work. I even brought in a doctor's note saying I wasn't allowed to work more than 20 hours a week, and still they try to give me 25 to 30.
Right now I just have to figure out what my options are and how much of my health I am willing to risk for health insurance.

Did almost exactly this for a con I wanted to go to - I went home and slept from 11 to about 2 and woke... not precisely fresh but at least I knew I wouldn't fall asleep at the wheel.

Frankly, three or four hours of sleep are better than none!

I am seriously thinking about the drive after work, but it is a 5 hour drive, and I want to be able to drive back that night. I think I'll try and get someone to switch with me, because I have a bad feeling about doing so much driving on so little sleep.

Thanks! I tried those, but for some reason she took her fics down. Gah! Apparently I got into the fiction just a bit too late. Now I'm trying to find anyone who actually has the stories, or would know where if they are in a Zine I could purchase. Any info? I'm completely in the dark.

Those were the fic's I read back in the day, they just didn't say 'Mara' as author.

Well, I hope you'll be able to make a decision. It's a hard one. I think I wouldn't risk my job for it unless I knew it was fairly easy to find a new (and better) one. If you do get to see the show, enjoy!

She's my favorite fan fic author as well, and I assume she took the fics down off the net because of her novels coming out but drop me a line and I can see what I can dig up. I saved nearly all of them years ago in html files on my laptop.

Wow, thank you so much! I absolutely love her fiction, and would love to read her GB stuff as well, since I missed it the first time around. I adore the GB, and would love to see how she wrapped the boys around her fingers.
