Just a little something...

Snow Drops

It was snowing again.
Pippin looked up from the shelter of his blanket, distantly aware of Merry's sweet breath beside him, of Frodo's deep breathing and Sam's gentle snoring.
The sounds blurred, melding with Aragorn's soft sighs, and Gandalf's hiss of the pipe. Somewhere, Gimli was snoring, and Legolas moved as softly as the snow.
The soft hiss of the white crystals falling to the earth seemed loudest of all to the young hobbit, his eyes taking in the snowflakes that were larger than any he had yet seen.
Though protected by the boughs of a great pine, some of the flakes still penetrated into their shelter, and he felt one land on his cheek.
How small a thing, he thought absently, moving to touch the drop of wetness, to cause so much change.
He lay back gingerly, moving slowly so as not to disturb the exauhsted others.
How could something so small, so seemingly fragile, turn a dark and forbidding place to such a peaceful haven? he wondered.
He felt his eyes droop, and the gentle kiss of the snow upon his lids. The cold suddenly did not bother him, nor the aching of his joints and the weariness that weighed him down.
Perhaps, he mused, feeling his mind begin to drift. Perhaps, the snow knows that it is but a little thing, and fragile.
He shifted, allowing his head to rest on Frodo's shoulder. His elder cousin stirred, though did not wake.
When the snow falls, Pippin thought before sleep claimed him, does it know that it goes to its death? Is that why it can change the world, because it gives everything it has?
Then he thought no more, and his dreams were filled with the vision of himself falling, peacefully, gratefully, to the earth below.
Knowing that he was giving all of hismelf to make the darkness disapear.

Sorry if its not very good. Not beta-ed, so all mistakes are mine alone.

Not very good??? I can't think of a single thing you've ever written that wasn't wonderful, Pip! What an insightful moment for Pippin.

(You might want to correct the spelling of 'disapear'.)

This is very good! I love Pippin's contemplation of the snow as it falls.

does it know that it goes to its death? Is that why it can change the world, because it gives everything it has?

This whole last bit, through the final line, are beautiful, with Pippin acknowledging and accepting the potential consequences of being part of this Fellowship.

What do you mean "not very good"??? Pshaw! I've never read anything by you that was "not very good." This was lovely and peaceful and angsty all at the same time and I loved it! Thanks for sharing it with us. :-)
