My sister is leaving in September for England, where's she going to be attending Kings College.  I'm hoping that, barring any catastrophes or other unknown illnesses, I'll be able to go visit her around March.  I have the vacation time for it, about 12 days, so I figure 10 days to explore and enjoy.  I fully intend to do a lot of wandering, and hope to get to France and Scotland, though that might be pushing it a bit, lol.  She's probably going to be busy with classes, depending on the time I go to visit, so is anyone interested in meeting up for lunch or something?  I really want to visit the Sherlock Holmes museum, and check out Baker Street, because I am that much of a geek.

Also, just to meet up with some of you from my flist would be great!  Maybe a mini-Holmes moot?  We can totally geek out together!

Anyway, nothing is definite yet, I still have to wait and work out details with sister.  But I'm getting excited just thinking about it!  Time to really start saving and being frugal.

It's definitely something to look forward to, and to plan ahead. Plus, it will give me incentive to work really hard, and try to get as many bills paid off as I can, lol.

Oh, now I'm jealous! :) My parents went this past fall and loved England a lot. One day...

Which King's College? I'm an alumna of King's College, London, but there are colleges of that name in Oxford and Cambridge too, and probably more.

I would very much like to moot, so you are welcome to come across to the Shire and I will show you around some of our heritage, or I could pop over to London? Holmes mootage is very definitely interesting.

I loved it so much the last time I went, I've been wanting to go again for a while. You will make it one day! I was looking at plane tickets and they really weren't that bad!

I believe it's Kings College in London. She went to Oxford last time she was in England, and I know she's going to be living in London.

It would be lovely to meet you! I am game for either popping into the Shire or meeting in London. I'll be a bit restricted in my travel by the fact I get lost going across the street, so it might be safer to meet someplace with lots of help!

Yes!!! That is the best! King's College people are all wonderful ;)

If you can find your way to Cheltenham, which is easy on the bus or the train, then I will do the same as I did with [livejournal.com profile] gentle_hobbit and drive you out to pretty places in the Cotswolds, which is to the west of Oxfordshire and definitely qualifies as the Shire - there are lots of places we can go that are very Tolkieny and were probably visited by the man himself - or we could do Oxford, which is about an hour from London on the coach and is definitely Tolkienland!

Although London would be fine, it's good to visit the Alma Mater every now and again so I could always combine the two. Let me know how things look and I will fit around you.

That sounds wonderful! I can do that, and will probably have my sister give me lessons on the tube and bus, lol! I'll know more details once she's actually settled, and the time gets closer.

Count me in too - I live in Oxford so could go in either direction, London or the Cotswolds, if you fancy it!

So do I! I just have to be really strict with myself and not spend any money I don't need to so I can pay off the bills and save up for the tickets and such. Ohhh, I really want this, lol!

Hey, cool news! I really hope we get the chance to meet up - I can show you plenty of historical / cultural shit all over England, or for that matter I have an extensive knowledge of nice bars to get drunk in!

I'd hesitantly suggest, if you'll only really have 10 days here, that you save both Scotland and France for another time. Transport here being what it is, you'll physically waste what is effectively a day getting from London to either Paris or Edinburgh, and when you get there all you'll really have time for is a whistle-stop of, well, Another Big City. Each of them merits having the time to spend at least a few days and get to know them as countries in their own right. Also, I love London but it is a bloody exhausting city, so don't over-pack the itinerary would be my rec.

Seconding the vote for Oxford - a day trip there if you haven't been before is definitely worth it! Ditto my own county, Warwickshire, which has all that nonsense like Stratford, tons of castles and cute olde townnes, Birmingham which I love but isn't to everyone's taste... and it's all easy to get to from London and I'd be more than happy to show you around.

But you know, LONDON! and you'll have to do the Tower and the BM and the National Gallery, and then Covent Garden and Soho and Hampstead or Camden, and maybe Parliament and Westminster Abbey, and all the interesting old bits of the City, and something in the West End and lots of PUBS and actually, if you want to get out of London and see something different, how about a trip to the coast? We have some very charmingly old-fashioned seaside towns that really aren't like anywhere else, though if you're coming over too late into the autumn, on second thoughts maybe next time!

Anyway, I'd be very happy to help if you have any questions about stuff here, though I guess your sister probably knows all the useful stuff already.. ;-)

Oh, that would be brilliant! I would love to just explore and see as much as I can! Last time I was in England I went to Oxford and found it amazing! And I was only able to stay in London for a very short time, less than a day, so being inundated with 10 days will be overkill! If I wring a few more days over there, believe me, I will, lol! And I think you're right, I should probably leave France and Scotland off for the next trip.

There's so many things I want to see, and I'm hoping if I came in March it won't be horrible weather or tourist season in full mass.

And I would love to go to a pub with you, though I am very much a lightweight! Honestly, one drink and I'm tipsy, two and I'm drunk! But I would love to do that!

I'm getting so excited thinking about this! I just have to save my pennies and my days off and make sure this happens. I am so tempted to buy the ticket now to make sure I can't back out!

OMG ME! I live only 40mins away from London on the train! I could definitely skive off lectures arrange a day to meet you!

Also, I would be totally up for doing the geeky SH stuff. I suspect that by March next year I would have already visited the museum, but I would gladly go again!

OMG, I just saw this! I'm so sorry it took me, like, 3 months to respond! I would love to meet up with you! If you still want to!
