To everyone who celebrated today, I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  I am very thankful for all my friends and family, and for everyone who has stood behind me through all the years on LJ.  You guys are awesome!

Or, well, I guess it was a draw.  :-)  My company, for volunteer month, has allowed those of us who were interested to volunteer one day this month on a regularly scheduled work day.   We got paid for the day, even though we didn't do our regular job.  So today I, along with 7 others, went to a local wildlife refuge.  We spent the first 3 hours chopping down huge reeds near a small lake that were encroaching on the nature trail, and then after lunch we cleared out more near the bird viewing house, two of us trying desperately to avoid landing in the water and the third finding out the hard way her hip boots had a hole in them, lol.

Then we walked two miles around the refuge, picking up garbage.  The group I was with was incredible.  I don't think I've laughed that hard in a long time!  Even though the work was dirty and hot, we were all in really good spirits.

But OMG, so tired!  My arms hurt from using the clippers and rake, and I know I'm going to feel it tomorrow.  But work was very nice, and let us go at 3 rather than 5, as was the original plan, so rather than have to sit at my desk for another two hours in smelly, dirty clothes, they told us to get out because we stank, lol!

I'm really glad I got to do the refuge.  Some of the volunteer opportunities were things like helping at a battered women's shelter, or helping a local charity collect donations at a hockey game.  Some people worked at a retirement home, and others helped baked cookies for something.  I think ours was the most physical, but even though I'm tired and sore, I wouldn't have traded it for anything, nor the people I worked with!

So... Yeah, that was my day!  How are you all doing?

Hello!  I hope you all had a nice Memorial Day, or a wonderful Monday.

I worked a few hours yesterday morning, which I'm really happy about as it was time and half, and then had the rest of the day off.  Went over to my Mom's where my brother his fiance surprised her with a new stove.  Then we had hamburgers and hot dogs and more food than was probably good for us.

After we ate we went to the cemetery to pay our respects and got caught in a downpour.

We had smores, which was hilarious.  We cooked HUGE marshmallows over the grill and then squished them between the graham crackers and proceeded to get marshmallow all over our faces.  It was great!  My brother, future sis-in-law, and I played monkey-in-the-middle with my mom's pug, who has so much energy it was the only way to wear her out.  Every time we dropped the tennis ball she would dive after it and claim it back, and then we had to chase her around the yard, lol.

After that we played dominoes and I was thoroughly beaten!

I called my friend, Dave, who I served with in AZ, and we talked for a good half hour.  It was so nice catching up with him and talking to someone who was with me when I went through some of the horrible stuff.

All in all, it was a great day.

Tomorrow's Memorial Day, a holiday that means a lot to me.  I just wanted to say that I will never forget those I served with, and am thankful for all my experiences, good and bad.

Here's to my Staff Sgt, who died from complications shortly after deploying.  I only knew him a few months, but he was a good man with two little boys.

Here's to my cousin, who lost his fingers, his ears, and more skin than we care to think about in a bomb that killed the 3 men with him.  I'm so thankful every day that he survived and can kiss his little girls good night.

And here's to all of those men and women still serving.

Sometimes it's easy to forget that less than a hundred years ago, women didn't have the right to vote.  We couldn't wear trousers, or go to most universities.   Those who did go against the norm were considered radicals, and suffered not only ridicule, but torture and death.  Therefore, in honor of these women, I leave you all these real life heroes.

Hello, all.

I know I've been a Gloomy Gus lately, so I just wanted to say thanks for listening, and do something a bit different.  I know, I'm shocked as well!

I've been feeling a lot better lately.  I think my new position at work has helped a lot.  My stress level is down, and my pain is pretty much under control.  So I'm counting my blessings, and offering you all a list of little things that make me smile.

1)  My family and friends.  Maybe not all the time, lol, but most of the time they make me laugh and smile.
2)  My kitties.  Even when I'm having a horrible day, they can make it all better just by patting my hand in a plea for more snuggles.
3)  My blanket.  I bought a huge blanket in Korea that is wonderful to snuggle under.  I use it as my summer blanket, because even when it's hot, I have to something covering me, and it does the trick wonderfully!
4)  Fresh flowers.  Every payday I try to get fresh flowers to stick in the vase in my hallway.  That way when I come home, the first thing I smell is flowers, and it always makes me smile to see their color.
5)  My bloomers.  Yes, I have bloomers.  I bought them because I was tired of my legs rubbing together when I wear a skirt or dress, and they are horribly old fashioned and I love them.  Also, they make great sleep shorts, lol.
6)  My teddy bear.  I always sleep with a stuffed animal, and for the past several months it has been a teddy bear my mom bought me.  Before that, I think it was Eeyore.  And before that, I think it was Pooh.
7)  My bobble heads at work.  Even when I have a bad customer, I look at them and they make me smile.  Of course, it helps that they're Star Wars, and have light sabers I can jab at the computer when I get really frustrated, but still...
8)  A good fanfic.  Nothing gets me quiet as excited as sitting down to read a brand new fanfic from one of my favorite authors.  I can barely contain myself and find myself laughing and giggling at nothing.
9)  Music, especially silly pop or techno.  I love Fireflies by Owl City.  I'm so happy at work I can listen to music now.  My day flies by and I actually look forward to going in.
10)  My tattoo.  I've had it since 2005 and it still gives me a little smile every time I catch a glimpse of it in the mirror.  It reminds me that I can be brave, and do something everyone else in my family considers crazy.  Also, I think I might get another one.

So that is my list, though it is by far not complete.  What are the little things in your life that make you smile?  A pretty piece of jewelry?  A soft hairbrush?  Or maybe your favorite pillow case?  Tell me what you love in your life that others might think odd or strange, but to you make your life a little bit better.
