piplover: (I don't care!)
My company has switched over to Ubunto, and I have to say, I'm not impressed.  It took me an hour yesterday to get everything set up and working, and even then I stil had troubles.  Files weren't loading, pages weren't coming up, and when they were, they were freezing or incomplete.  Urgh.

All this to "save money."  Which I laugh at, because I can already tell that this will probably cost them more in lost hours than in just paying for the license for Microsft.

Not much else going on. Mostly just working, going home to crash, and then back to work.  I am so happy I have Memorial Day off, even if I'm only being paid for 8 hours when I work a 10 hour day.

It's been kind of chilly the last few days, and rainy.  Perfect weather for sitting at home with a good book and cup of tea. Hmmmm. Tea.

Also, I've found I've become addicted to hidden object gams.  Like, seriously, I love those stupid things.  I will lose an entire day playing the thing.   The plots are usually weak and the graphics not that great, but try and pull me away before I finish the quest.   I've limited myself to buying only one per week... or maybe two if I get a free one with my punch card. *grin*

Also, Plants VS Zombies. Most addictive game ever!

I totally need a geek icon.  How do I not have one yet?

Garh!!  I decided to splurge a little and purchased a Sherlock Holmes game that was a download from Amazon.  Everything went fine until I went to play. When I click on New Game, it freezes!  My whole computer freezes, and I have to bring up the task manager to close it out. What the heck?  My computer has more then enough power and oomph to play this.  Anyone have a clue what I'm doing wrong?  I think I'm cursed when it comes to games, because every time I try, something like this happens. Sigh.

For all of you out there so much more technically savy than me, how do you link chapters to a story and have it say which part of the story it is?  The SH story I'm working on is probably going to be about 30,000 to 35,000 words long, so it definitely isn't going to fit in one post, and I want to be able to link to the other parts.  I don't just want just the url, but a nice link that says "part 2" and part 3."

I have been on LJ since 2004, and I have yet to figure this out.  It's driving me nuts!

Sigh

Didn't get any of my phone messages last night, so missed my future sis-in-law's birthday party.  Garrrhh!  So frustrating!  I checked my phone right after work, no message.  Checked it when I got home, no message.  Checked it again before I went to bed, no message.  Woke up this morning, two texts and two voice messages, all asking me to go out to dinner and then over to Mom's for cake and ice cream.  Am I pissed?  Hell yes!
piplover: (OMG!)
I bought a new computer today!  I don't know if it was a moment of madness or just me finally reaching the end of my rope, but after my computer completely and utterly died this morning, I had enough!

I went to sign on this morning and all I got was a blank, black screen.  I restarted, nothing.  I tried in safe mode, nothing.  I even put the boot disk in and tried to wipe it and reinstall the op system, nothing!  In a last ditch effort I wiped out Vista and put in a separate op system, and finally got something other than a black screen. And then the computer kept shutting itself off.

So, I figured it was time.  I took my friend with me to Best Buy, applied for the store card, and bit the bullet and purchased a new computer.

And I LOVE IT!!!!!

I AM BACK!!!!!!!
piplover: (Hello Adipose)
Happy Mother's Day to all the mommy's on my list.  I hope your day is filled with sunshine, love, and all the happiness you could ever want.

My sister came down on Friday to surprise my mom, and everyone else, lol, and it was a wonderful weekend.  We celebrated Mother's Day yesterday, as she has to go back to Seattle today, and I have to work.  Boo!  But we had fun.

My brother and his fiance cooked steak and crab legs, and we had backed potatoes and salads.  My poor sister recently found out she is allergic to milk, so we were all frantically checking labels to make sure she could eat stuff.  She had to leave off the ice cream cake, but brother found some non-dairy ice cream and apple strudels for her, and she was happy.

Also, the sis and I went vintage close shopping yesterday.  She's a stick with legs, and so was able to fit into the most beautiful gowns from the 1930s, 40s and 50s.  I was soooooo jealous!!!!!!!  Honestly, ever dress I liked I couldn't even imagine fitting into.  The owner of the shop was like, "I never have anyone small enough to fit into these dresses, so it's nice to see how they look on people and not a manquein."  We were both extremely jealous, lol.

My sister took it all gracefully and bought a very pretty summer dress from the late 30s that was in remarkably great condition.  All she has to do is add a few snaps and she's set.

Once more, SO JEALOUS!

After that shopping excursion we just kind of lazed about and then watched The Blind Side.  It was excellent!

All in all, it was a lovely day, and I think my mom was happy with it.  She's the kind of person you have to tie down if you want her to relax, so we considered it a win that the only thing she did was clean the kitchen after dinner, and we all chipped in to help.

Hopefully today will be a slow day at work, with no upsetting customers.  I've been feeling on the brink of crappy again, but not enough to stop me from doing things, so I'm counting myself lucky and taking today slow.  Money has been rather tight lately, what with all the bills suddenly coming due and not enough money to pay them, but I'm not going to stress myself out about it.  Things will be taken care of, I'll just be tight for a while.  Sigh.  Which means it will be a bit longer before my computer is fixed.  It's still giving me trouble, though thankfully it has stopped turning itself off.  I'm afraid to save anything to it, and am backing even the littlest thing up.  I'm hoping in the next month or so I can take it in and have it thoroughly examined and cleansed, and then hopefully it will work correctly again.  Until then, please forgive me if I'm absent.  I'm able to sneak on at work, but I don't want to press my luck too much with that.  And it's terribly frustrating to try and post anything at home.

Sorry this was so long.  Hope you all have a beautiful Sunday, wherever you are!

Hello!

Hello, all!

Still alive, computer still on the fritz.  It's behaving itself somewhat for now, so I thought I would post a quick update to let you all know I'm still around and reading your journals.  I just can't comment very much since my computer has the unfortunate habit of freezing and dying if I breath too hard.

Anyway, re-uploaded the op system a few days ago, and although it's still freezing on me and being a pain in the butt, it is, for now, working.  So, yay!  I'm hoping I can save up enough the next few paydays to get it fixed, but we'll see.

Now, question for you!  It is Spring, and time to get my hair cut.  It hasn't been trimmed since September and I'm looking kind of shaggy.  I present to you two pics.  I'm really sorry for how big the pics turned out.  I look like a total dork, but I'm willing to suffer the humiliation for some advice.  If you have dial up, you may want to avoid looking under the cut.

This is how I look now: ME! )

So, my question to all of you is, how short should I cut it?  Do I chop it again, or just trim it slightly?  I'm fine with either one, although it is kind of nice to  have a bit longer hair.  Any advice would be helpful.  I can't afford to get it cut for a few more weeks, but I'm kind of tired of feeling like a lion with a case of static cling.

So the tech Gods are still angry, apparently.  My computer completely died last night.  When I started it up I kept getting a message that my operating system was not a genuine copy.  Ummm, hello?  What the hell, computer?

I honestly don't know what to do with it anymore.  I can't afford a new one, but I'm very doubtful taking it to get diagnosed and tweaked will fix it.  I ended up reinstalling the op system this morning.  Ugh.

I have a headache, my stomach hurts, and I don't want to go to work.  I called in an hour late to see if I can fix at least the headache.  Don't really want to go in at all today but really can't afford a sick day.  Sigh.  This sucks.

What the hell am I supposed to sacrifice to get the little gremlins on my side so they stop messing with my computer?  Grrr!
piplover: (Stayed in bed)
I think I must have pissed off some kind of tech God.  I had to redo my computer's operating system on Wednesday, because it only gave me the black screen of death when I turned it on, and today my cable box started smoking before totally dying.

0_o

Doh!

I got it unhooked and turned everything off, but my place smells of burnt bacon and I can't watch my cable.  Also, I hadn't yet watched the new Supernatural, and I'm pretty sure it's lost now.  Grrrrr.

The tech is supposed to come out tomorrow, hopefully to fix my box (HA!) or give me a  new one.  Until then, I guess I'll just have to make do with watching Granada's Sherlock Holmes and perhaps reading a book tonight.  Oh, the horror!  (Snicker)

Still... Kind of miffed about losing all the shows I had saved.  Not to mention it's going to cost about 100$ to get the computer diagnosed and fixed.  Since I've missed so much work to being sick, my paycheck has been pathetically small, so it may be a few weeks before I can take it to get all the bugs out.  Sigh.  It always comes down to money.

Oh, well.  I hope you all are faring better than I.  Take care, and have a safe and happy weekend!
piplover: (Stayed in bed)
So... Computer died.  And I brought it back to life thanks to my brother.  Still lost the Help_Haiti story, which means I just have to start over.  This one will be better.  *Emphatic nods*

I had to redo the hard drive as the computer had completely lost the operating system.  No idea what happened.

I had to leave work early yesterday, which means another point.  I hope that when I get the FMLA they will take that off, but if they don't.  Well...  I think I still qualify for unemployment if it comes to that.  I hope to hell it doesn't, because the thought of starting over, of spending weeks looking for work, just makes me want to be sick.  But the reality is I'm sick, they don't know with what or why yet, and they're pretty sure this isn't going away soon.  So... Have to plan for the worst and hope for the best.

Anyway, I called in two hours late today, since I was trying to literally crawling this morning trying to get out of bed and figured it was better to just let me sleep a bit longer than try to drive in that condition.  I feel better now, and hope I can make it the rest of the week.  I only have three days to go, including today.  I can do this.

I hope everyone is doing all right.

Went to turn on my computer this morning and it said that Windows was no more.  I have no clue what the hell happend, but it looks like the computer died.  I can't find my hardware disks to save my life, I feel like utter crap this morning, I was sick all last night, and now I have to go to work.  I don't know what to do anymore.  I think I'm going to take a half day, and to hell with the points.  I just can't take this stress today.

My help_Haiti story is probably lost, and I had three pages of it!  I was almost done, damnit!  I just want to cry.  If I can't find my disks, I may either just get another computer or have to buy the Windows software, whichever is cheaper.  So much for going to visit my dad in August.  I just don't know what I'm going to do.  Gods, can't I get a break?  Just once?  Please?

*Bangs head against a very hard surface*
piplover: (happy)
Hello, everyone! I'm back, and oh, how I missed you all! I got a new hard drive for Christmas and my brother installed it today. I've spent the better part of several hours trying to put everything back on it and get it set up properly again. Still working on it, but I'm just so thankful.

Sooooooo.... In celebration, I present a little hobbit snippet that I wrote a while ago and found while I was reloading. Enjoy!!

I'm Piplover over on DW if anyone is interested.  Not that I'll probably post there or anything, but I figured it would be nice to have a backup journal in case this one goes belly up.

Ack!

Just a quick test - does my icon show me?   Or does it say Come to the Darkside with a black background?  How do I fix it?  Help me Obi-Wan!
piplover: (suck!)
Ok, maybe not computers, but Vista and modems and technical stuff! My internet went out today around noon, and I figured one of the cats knocked my wireless connection off. I've only had it up for about three days, so I'm totally ignorant of how this works. Then I couldn't get it to connect again. I called the cable company and they had me hook up my modem to the computer directly, which means about ten feet of cable running through my apartment....again.

Sigh.

So I have my internet again, just not my wireless, because for some reason the computer is no longer recognizing it. My brother is coming over tomorrow to look at it, so I figure I'm going to swallow my pride and pay him the 30 dollars he wanted before Christmas, since he knows a hell of a lot more about computers than I do. Good grief.

Anyway, I really think it's because of Vista that this is acting up now. Grrrr. If I wasn't so dependent on the internet for, you know, a social life, I would totally chuck the operating system out the window.
piplover: (suck!)
Is it just me, or has LJ done something to the opening page again? It's all...weird. Am I just deficient today, or are they screwing around? *Sigh*

Got this from [profile] sila_lumenn .   I cannot figure out how to get the dang thing to take you to the video, so you have to cut and past it, but its well worth it.  I am so stupid when it comes to computers, sorry!

Oh my Gods I hate Vista!  I got my student loan in on Monday and went and got a new computer.  However, it has Vista on it, and I really, really hate it!  Seriously, I hate it so much I'm almost ready to take it back and get a computer that doesn't have the damn thing on it.  I'm having so much trouble with it that I am having problems doing homework, and seeing as that's the main reason I got the new thing to begin with, I'm really starting to get pissed.  Does anyone else have this problem?  Does anyone hate Vista as much as me, or am I being a technophobe?  Seriously, any help would be welcomed, because this thing cost me almost 700 and it is driving me insane!
piplover: (mourning)
My computer died. Completely, totally dead. I lost all my writings. Everything from the past 6 years. The hardrive was wiped. Nothing remains.
I don't know what to do. I'm devestated. I'm - I'm just devestated. I can never get those back.
piplover: (Default)
My computer is trying to eat itself. Again. I am really getting sick of it. Now I have to beg and plead and bribe my brother into helping me fix it. Sigh.
