My computer died. Completely, totally dead. I lost all my writings. Everything from the past 6 years. The hardrive was wiped. Nothing remains.
I don't know what to do. I'm devestated. I'm - I'm just devestated. I can never get those back.

Oh, honey! (((hugs you)))
Remember, most everything is published at one site or another. You just have to download it again. That won't help with unpublished stories or those in progress, but you haven't lost everything.

Oh dear ((((Pip))) How awful! I do hope you'll be able to build most of it back up from other places they've been archived or published.

Oh hon, I'm so sorry to hear that

Did you have your stories published on the web somewhere? Or were those private stories, just for yourself?

I feel for you!

I agree with the folks who mention archives elsewhere.

Are you sure the harddrive was actually wiped? It's really hard to obliterate data on a drive unless you hit it with a strong magnet. Before you toss the whole thing, check the phone book or the web for data recovery people in your area and do some pricing. We've recovered stuff we thought was thoroughly lost that way, although it wasn't cheap!

At least you have some things on LJ and at SoA! And at PippinHealers. But, oh how horrid for you!

I live in fear of that sort of thing happening to me, which is why I tend to post so quickly.

I'm so sorry to hear this happened. As RSF said, the data is probably still there, you will just have to pay to recover it.

This illustrates the importance of backing up. Burn CDs/DVDs, email stuff to your own web-based email account, get an external hard drive, you can even back up onto an iPod.

Of course, I recommend getting a Mac for your next computer. Consumer Reports in its current issue shows Apple to be tops in reliability and needing the fewest repairs.

Aww, I'm sorry, hon. Maybe you had a back-up you did a while ago that you've just forgotten? I had that when one of my drives packed in. All dusty at the back of a shelf. And, as everyone has already said, there are all the archives and stuff...
