Things that make me smile
May. 18th, 2010 09:28 pmHello, all.
I know I've been a Gloomy Gus lately, so I just wanted to say thanks for listening, and do something a bit different. I know, I'm shocked as well!
I've been feeling a lot better lately. I think my new position at work has helped a lot. My stress level is down, and my pain is pretty much under control. So I'm counting my blessings, and offering you all a list of little things that make me smile.
1) My family and friends. Maybe not all the time, lol, but most of the time they make me laugh and smile.
2) My kitties. Even when I'm having a horrible day, they can make it all better just by patting my hand in a plea for more snuggles.
3) My blanket. I bought a huge blanket in Korea that is wonderful to snuggle under. I use it as my summer blanket, because even when it's hot, I have to something covering me, and it does the trick wonderfully!
4) Fresh flowers. Every payday I try to get fresh flowers to stick in the vase in my hallway. That way when I come home, the first thing I smell is flowers, and it always makes me smile to see their color.
5) My bloomers. Yes, I have bloomers. I bought them because I was tired of my legs rubbing together when I wear a skirt or dress, and they are horribly old fashioned and I love them. Also, they make great sleep shorts, lol.
6) My teddy bear. I always sleep with a stuffed animal, and for the past several months it has been a teddy bear my mom bought me. Before that, I think it was Eeyore. And before that, I think it was Pooh.
7) My bobble heads at work. Even when I have a bad customer, I look at them and they make me smile. Of course, it helps that they're Star Wars, and have light sabers I can jab at the computer when I get really frustrated, but still...
8) A good fanfic. Nothing gets me quiet as excited as sitting down to read a brand new fanfic from one of my favorite authors. I can barely contain myself and find myself laughing and giggling at nothing.
9) Music, especially silly pop or techno. I love Fireflies by Owl City. I'm so happy at work I can listen to music now. My day flies by and I actually look forward to going in.
10) My tattoo. I've had it since 2005 and it still gives me a little smile every time I catch a glimpse of it in the mirror. It reminds me that I can be brave, and do something everyone else in my family considers crazy. Also, I think I might get another one.
So that is my list, though it is by far not complete. What are the little things in your life that make you smile? A pretty piece of jewelry? A soft hairbrush? Or maybe your favorite pillow case? Tell me what you love in your life that others might think odd or strange, but to you make your life a little bit better.

Date: 2010-05-19 05:50 am (UTC)2) The autographed pics on my wall at home and school - the ones at school are mostly signed to me and to my students as well - scifi actors, cartoonists and artists...there's a story for each of them. The original drawing Alan Lee did for me (and students) is up in front of me right now and makes me grin whenever I see it.
3) Gardening. Half the things in my yard give me allergies, but I LOVE planting and taking care of things out there. I get all distracted by colors and textures and the feel of soil in my hands. And bugs - still as intriguing as they were when I was little.
4. Books. I get lost for a while. Simple as that. Whether it's Tolkien, Lackey, Austen or Eliot, fluffy "historical romance", or non-fiction stuff for research and curiosity. It's been my refuge since I was a little kid having to stay inside due to health problems.
5. Music. Singing, playing, drumming, or listening to someone else do it really well. Gives me a burst of positive energy.
6. The print of Picasso's Don Quixote and Sancho Panza on my wall. Reminds me of my need and tendency to tilt and windmills for the good of others and why I do it.
7. Really good sci-fi or fantasy tv., most of my life now. Doctor Who, Torchwood, Firefly, Max Headroom (and doesn't that just date me!), Stargate and Stargate Atlantis, Sanctuary. And watching it with people I care about who love it too.
8. Writing. I keep working on it so that someday I can have more than a few poems published...
9. My rings - my Celtic-knot wedding ring and my engagement ring (a claddagh band). Symbolic, and give me good memories.
10. The basket of beanie animals on my desk at school - they're all either marine or endangered species and I and my students fidget with them and play with them when we have an odd moment here or there. I've collected them and had them in more than one classroom over the years.
That's all I can come up with at the moment...off to bed. :)

Date: 2010-05-19 02:18 pm (UTC)I love adding little things to my surroundings that give variety and cheer, what some might term 'whimsy' but not the tacky kind. A large seashell that I picked up at a garage sale that half-hides in my plants, tutti-frutti toothpaste, a jointed wood artist's dummy that has his pose rearranged on a regular basis by my kids, a watercolor of cows floating away from their pasture like balloons, pots of shamrocks and purple passion vine by the window. The world has so much to smile at. :-)

Date: 2010-05-20 05:12 am (UTC)A new book always makes me smile. A real one, not an ebook, ptah. Finishing a knitting or a jewelry project always does, too. And starting a new story/getting into a new fandom always brightens my week, at the very least.

Date: 2010-05-20 06:23 am (UTC)Ohhh, I love crocheting. When you finish that project, and know you've created something from nothing but yarn, a stick and your own hands... It's an amazing feeling!
I also love that thrill from joining a new fandom. I used to be pretty single fandom minded until I realized that I could flip back and forth, and my time pretty much vanished, lol.
