It's hard to believe the another Christmas is past and New Years is almost here.  It was a very quiet Christmas this year, which was nice.  I worked all Christmas Eve day, and then went over to my mom's.  It was just the two of us, so we watched a movie and made home made pizza.

Before I went to my mom's, however, I stopped briefly by a - well, they aren't really a friend. More like someone I knew 10 years ago who bumped into me on the street and we exchanged numbers.  I hadn't seen her for 10 years, since before I joined the Army, and I have to say, it was hard.

Her apartment was - I can't even imagine living in a place like that.  The furniture was falling apart and looked like it belonged in a dump.  The apartment smelled, like garbage and pot and sweat.  Her floor appeared to not have been cleaned in years, and garbage was piled up in the kitchen.  I felt bad for her.

She was alone, as her fiance and her son were visiting his family, and I could tell she just wanted a friend. But I felt so uncomfortable there, listening to what she had been doing and what was going on in her life. She's been in and out of jail, her son is in trouble with the law, and she currently doesn't have a job.  She was very much lost, and I wanted to help her.

But I think she felt really awkward, too.  We didn't really know what to say to each other. I'm not the same person I was when she knew me, and neither is she.  We've both had a lot happen to us, and where I like to think I've grown, I can only think she's fallen.

Anyway, the reason I bring this up is because it made me very grateful for what I do have in my life. I may have a job I hate, but it lets me pay the bills. My family is all safe and doing well, for the most part, and I had them close to me during Christmas.  I have a nice apartment and two cats whom I adore.  My life, though not fantastic, is still pretty good.

So, that was my Christmas Eve.  After dinner, Mom and I went to midnight mass at my church.  The priest was a member of the Liberal Catholics, and the ceremony was of the traditional kind. My mom said it was the same ceremony she used to have 5 days a week while at Catholic school, though the priest did it in English and not Latin, as she is used to. Neither of us is Catholic now, but we do enjoy the ceremony and the mass was nice.

Christmas was spent with family, opening presents, playing dominoes, and eating way more food than was probably healthy.  I also made mulled wine, which was tasty, but strong, lol!

Yesterday I saw War Horse, and OMG. That was amazing. I won't spoil it, but I can say it was a very powerful, profound movie.  It was stunning visually, the music was amazing, and the story was told both sympathetically and accurately.  There were no bad guys. It was just everyone muddling through.

Then the family and I went out for dinner, and then back to the theater to see Sherlock Holmes 2.

All in all, it was a very busy, full 3 days, but it was a wonderful Christmas and boxing day.  I hope everyone else had a good holiday.    Take care!
