More fannishness
Jan. 12th, 2013 02:34 pmI'm hoping I can be a bit more fannish this year. I'm going to try and whine less and be more enthusiastic about different things. Movies, books, fanfics, writings... that sort of thing.
I decided to give the new Total Recall a try, since I liked the first one and thought, why not? I'm only about 10 minutes in, but I have to say I'm really not too impressed.
It seems a lot of the movies they're remaking these days were so popular because they had interesting plotlines, a good bit of action, and were fun. I'm not saying the original Total Recall was a work of art, but it seemed to have a more diverse cast and focused more on the plot rather than the current actress' butt and boobs.
I'm hoping it will improve, but I'm not too sure. I kind of wish a lot of the movies being made were more original, and not regurgitated knock-offs that don't seem to bring much to the movie except the same name. It seems the animated movies are where the true creativity is. Wreck It Ralph was a great movie, as was The Rise of the Guardians. I really liked the Hobbit, have seen it three times already, and I loved it. Those are the kinds of movies I wish there were more of.
Anyone else kind of tired of seeing movies remade? What kind of movie would you want to see?

Date: 2013-01-13 12:40 am (UTC)God, YES! It seems there's not an original creative bone left in Hollywood. >.< Even the "new" stuff tends to just be rehashes of old stuff (new Star Wars, new Jurassic Park etc.). I really do wish Hollywood would leave the classics alone and actually come up with something original, and if they can't find someone who can!
I am often amazed at some of the things fans can produce - absolutely stunning pieces of fiction, or art, or videos, that far exceed some of the truly horrid drek that gets produced now. It would be wonderful if the PTBs weren't so far up their own arses that they can't see the resource they actually have. I would absolutely LOVE to see a studio hire someone that is actually FANNISH to create something new. And not fannish in this 50 Shades of Crap fannish, but actual, PROFESSIONAL quality stuff that is worth reading/watching that is oodles of out there .
I want to throw up every time I see people raving about 50 SOG, and keep boggling that this woman who wrote really, really bad Harry Potter fanfic and turned it into an absolutely ICKY series of books with a few tweaks has managed such popularity when there are so many talented (ACTUALLY talented) authors/artists involved in fandom. *sigh*

Date: 2013-01-13 02:28 am (UTC)And I totally agree about Hollywood! They need to tap into some creative outlets and start making new stuff! I mean, I look back on the movies from the 80s and 90s and think, what happened to all that creativity? Movies like Legend, Princess Bride, LA Story, Legend of Billy Jean, Karate Kid. Those were unique, different ideas back then, they hadn't been done a million times. Now the stuff they put out seems to be just wash, rinse, repeat. There are very few movies that are actually new and unique. It's maddening!!

Date: 2013-01-13 02:42 am (UTC)Exactly!!! Now what do we get? Remakes of Karate Kid, Dirty Dancing, etc. It makes me want to cry when I see movies I absolutely loved as a kid being turned into such absolute drivel! And usually it's terrible actors taking the place of these iconic stars (my GOD, they're considering people from GLEE! and from Dancing With the Stars! *headdesk x infinity* for Dirty Dancing).
It's just people going through the motions in Hollywood now. It's like the same forumla used over and over and over again. *groan*

Date: 2013-01-13 03:24 am (UTC)The saddest thing though, is seeing really enjoyable movies that have that spark of originality being criticized and then craptastic movies like these shitty remakes (or these movies based on GOD AWFUL books *coughstwilightcoughs* *coughsfiftyshadesofabusecoughs*) being lauded as ZOMG!!! SO AWESOME! *gags*

Date: 2013-01-13 04:13 am (UTC)I really think that animated movies are where all the creative, new movies are coming from. Kung Fu Panda is so good, and so is the sequel. It was such a unique thing, too. I'm just sad that most of them are for kids, because if they turned a tenth of that creativity into making something new and brilliant it would be amazing.

Date: 2013-01-13 03:01 pm (UTC)*nods* Too true. Kung Fu Panda was awesome, as was How to Train Your Dragon, Tangled, Brave...all awesome. And what do we get as adults? Twilight, a 50 Shades of Crap movie, Jurassic Park 4, Disney doing Star Wars and list goes on. *sigh*

Date: 2013-01-13 11:22 am (UTC)I hardly get to the cinema these days because it involves finding a friend who has a wheelchair fit car AND who wants to watch what I Do !
but I sympathise all the same
will give thought to what I would like to see made
in some ways - though I understand the point about animation etc- I would really like something very simple and creative just because uncluttered
something in which people's acting astually coutned for something
probably just my age though :)

Date: 2013-01-13 05:21 pm (UTC)I totally agree on wanting to see something a bit simpler. I think that's what I love so much about older movies. They weren't filled with CGI and special effects. It was about the script and the actors bringing it to life. I love the Blindside because of that. Just a wonderful script and brilliant acting.
But nowadays it seems a movie is only made if there's a whole ton of monsters and explosions. It would be nice to see movies made for the storylines again.

Date: 2013-01-13 02:41 pm (UTC)A second and maybe even third sequel to 'Master and Commander'. Of course with Mr Crowe and Mr Bettany in the lead roles.
Anything, everything involving Paul Bettany and a fat chick. Well, I'm sure you noticed: but female roles in movies, especially Hollywood: they all look alike! Heartwrenchingly thin, same face, same untalented girl set aside the main actor to keep up the banner of 'we-are-all-heteresexual-here'...
A real guy/guy movie! Without a female role. Or vice/versa. Something like 'Thelma & Louise'.
A movie, where in the end good and bad joins, or where the villains win...
An animation movie for ADULTS!!! More chinese/asian actors in movies.
More animation films in general :)
If remake, then maybe a parody perhaps?
RDJude kissing. 'Pink Swan' - starring: Robert Downey jr as the swan :) *snort* He would be awesome. RDJ in tutu. YAY!!! I want to see that!!!! And his Judesie as a co-swan or his agent? Doesn't matter! He had to be at his side. Did I mention RDJude kissing? I did :) Yes, I know I'm mad :)
As for 2013 in general: yip! Same here. Find some new distractions, post more in my own journal. Start my own business. Write a script for 'Satan's Alley' :) Write more (porn) in general. Read more. Learn another language.
My... weird world we live in. And yes - agreed: No more remakes!!!
And - RDJude kissing :) Keep a stiff upper lip!

Date: 2013-01-13 05:23 pm (UTC)I cannot tell you how much I would love to see a movie that was just a guy/guy movie without the stupidly redundant female included. Or, like you said, a female/female role. I'm tired of them flinging women and men into the script to make it more heterosexual. I'm sorry, but sometimes I just want an action movie without any romance. Is that so much to ask for?

Date: 2013-01-13 07:23 pm (UTC)An action movie without any romance... @_@... I'd thought to be alone on this planet wishing/hoping for something like this!!! I would give a bucket full of blood to see Tony Stark and Jarvis, or... pff, don't know. Pepper spoilt Iron Man for me. All 1400 parts of it...
Have you seen 'Bound' btw? Most beautiful sex scene evva!!! Between two women!!! *sighs*
Or an animation fantasy film with beings who have no gender at all... flying...
I'm naiv and I still have dreams :) RDJude forever! Kissing...! Damned!

Date: 2013-01-13 09:31 pm (UTC)I'd LOVE to see some books that have already been made into movies made into movies done RIGHT! I have yet to see a movie of The Count of Monte Cristo or of The Three Musketeers that was not altered completely out of shape! I'm not talking about a few alterations like PJ did with LotR or TH, but totally different stories.
I'd like to see either a movie or a TV miniseries about The Wars of the Roses! Accurate with costumes and historically factual--that period of time was SO amazingly dramatic as it happened. It doesn't need a lot of "window dressing" to make it interesting.
There have been a few good ones recently that have been very different to the "Hollywook usual". I am so hoping to get a chance to see "Lincoln" and
"The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" was wonderfully quirky and different.

Date: 2013-01-14 03:11 pm (UTC)Exactly! They seem to strip out everything from the original that made it so good and turn it into something horrible.
I really want to see Lincoln, it looks amazing. And I've heard of the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, but haven't seen it yet. I'll have to rent it!
There are a few this year that were different. Argo looks interesting, and Life of Pi looks amazing. And the new one with Tom Hanks, I want to see that.
I think I've been spoiled because there was a bit of a run with new stuff that was actually new over the holiday. Now, though, it's all going to be big explosions and pointless sex and CGI up the wahoo. I am, however, looking forward to the new Star Trek. I'm hoping with my geeky little heart it will be a good one!

Date: 2013-01-14 04:37 pm (UTC)See, some things work with re-makes and re-boots, and some don't. Star Trek works that way simply because of the way the ST universe was set up by Gene Rodenberry--it was meant to expand and make way for new interpretations, in just the same way that it works in Doctor Who to have all the different regenerations of the Doctor. Movie versions of TV shows or plays or musicals are a tradition--so long as the movie captures the essence of the original. I think the most successful movie re-do of a TV show was the Addams Family movie and the first sequel (but not the third which was too OTT). And I like seeing Broadway shows turned into movies, but not so much the other way around! Some TV versions of movies are better than the original (e.g. M*A*S*H*).
But the problem comes when things that weren't that great to begin with are turned into a different medium. Sometimes they improve, but more often than not a bad movie makes a bad TV show and vice-versa! And a bad movie makes a worse re-make!
And some old movies simply won't work in the modern world and there are a few old movies I love that would be TERRIBLE if they were remade--"The Quiet Man" and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" are fave old movies for me, but OMG! they are so sexist it would be nearly impossible to remake them in modern times. I hope no one ever attempts it!
