The street lamps were shrouded in the early morning fog, a thick wetness that clung to lashes and puffed from cold lips in a whispery little clouds. Unconciously Jack rubbed his hands together, trying to gain feeling in his frozen fingers.

Soon, he told himself, closing his eyes for a single moment, preparing his mind for what he knew was to come. Soon it will be over.
Something cold and delicate as an angel's wing brushed against his cheek, and his eyes snapped opened, startled.

The snowflakes were large, thick and puffy, as in a cartoon, and soon his silver flecked hair was gleaming as though crowned in diamonds. Still, he did not move from his vigil. He had promised, and this promise had to be kept.

Slowly, as though laboring through the thick fog and snow, the sun began to make its way over the mountains that dotted the horizen, orange and brilliant despite the clouds. He stared, mesmorized, thankful for the heaviness of the air which permitted him to do so.

His watch began to beep at him, and finally he allowed his limbs to move, his frozen feet to walk determindly across the street, to the house that he had kept vigil over all that long night. When he reached to knock at the door, he hesitated only a moment. The sound of his flesh hitting wood was startling loud in the hushed silence.

A young woman, no more than twenty-six, opened the door after his second knock, as though she had been about to head out. Her hair was brown and slighlty curly, her eyes large and green, cheeks slightly pale from the earliness of the morning. Her gaze met his and for one moment he could see the panic welling up within her.

"Mrs. Perez?" he asked soflty, knowing his own face was haggard from lack of sleep, wet from snow and flushed from the cold. "I am friend of your husband's. There was an accident at the mountain, but he's going to be all right. He wanted me to make sure you were all right, with the winter storm coming, and to see if you needed anything."

Their eyes met once more, her gaze softened, and she beckoned him in.

"Please, Colonel, come in. Let me make you some tea," she said softly, trying to hide her shaking hands and the tears that suddenly came to her eyes.

And Jack entered, into the warmth of his friend's house, doing for him what Major Perez had once done for Sarah so many long years ago.

"He's going to be all right, Ma'am," he whsipered softly, and only by the slight relaxation of her shoulders did he know that she heard him.

Just got off 24 hour staff duty, so to honor my utter state of about to fall on my face tired, I offer this little Stargate ficlet. I'm going to go crash night.
Enjoy!

Crossed Eyes

Jack blinked, then blinked again as his eyes refused to cooperate with his brain and focus on what Daniel was tellin him. Somthing about these ruins being the missing link to all of mankind or something. Yadda yadda yadda.

He yawned for probably the twelth time, trying to keep his attention where it belonged, and not to the little crease in his sock that was really starting to annoy him.

"Sir?"

Carter's voice brought him back to the others, realizing that they were all staring at him in concern.

"Are you well, O'Neill?" Teal'c asked softly, his left eyebrow raised.

Was he well? Hmmmm, let's think. Up for the past three days trying to finish that damn paperwork on his desk that seemed to have been breeding before Senetor Kinsey could throw the book at SGC for not having enough paper clips, followed by a seven mile hike to the local ruins and then inundated by Daniel in lecture mode.

Had he ever been this tired before in his life? He was saddenned when his mind screamed back a resounding YES!

"FIne," he finally mumbled, realizing that they had been awaiting his respons while his mind babbled at him. "You were saying, Daniel?"

"It was nothing, Jack," Danile said hastily, backpedalling from his earlier enthusiasm, concern evident in his voice. "I think we should make camp here for the night, let me get started on the translations early tomorrow."

Jack nodded abesntly, once more forcing his eyes to uncross and FOCUS! A moment later he found himself sitting on his butt, no idea how he had got there, with Carter, Daniel and Teal'c hovering over him like the three whitches and their cauldron. Any minute he expected to hear Daniel start cackling and Carter to intone, "Boil, boil, toil and trouble!"

"Um, Sir? When was the last time you slept?" Carter demanaded, taking in the dark circles under his eyes and his pale complexion.

"Or ate?" Daniel added, his tone accusing.

"Indeed, O'Neill, you do not look well," Teal'c contributed. "How did you manage to bybass DoctorFrasier in your current state?"

Jack felt the slow flush creep up his cheeks as he avoided their gaze, this time allowing his eyes unfocus.
The last thing he heard as he felt himself slip away into blessed sleep was Daniel and Carter's accusitory tones.

"Jack! You duped the Doc again!?"

Smiling slightly, he allowed sleep to claim him.

Hello, all!
Well, I think I have finally managed to get my computer to stop trying to self destruct, so you should be seeing more of me around. I'm sorry I haven't been around much, and I will try and catch up with all of you, but hopefully I'll be able to stay connected now.
In the meanwhile, here is a little something that I have been not been able to post for a while. It's not hobbits, but my other, equal obsession: Stargate SG-1. Thanks go to Gayalondial for the wonderful beta job. In fact, you can thank her for introducing me to this wonderful world, as it was her amazing Crossover that got me hooked.
This is my first Stargate fic, so please be kind. I'm not certain I got the characters just right, but I'll keep trying. And no worries, I am still in love with Pippin and all things hobbity!
So, here is the tale, and please enjoy!

To Sleep
