My cats defy logic

piploverI just had the most bizare experience with my cats. When I was getting them their food I accidentally stepped on Colonel's paw and he took off, while Rodney puffed up and looked around like he expected the devil himself to appear. When I went to check on Colonel he took off into my room, and just as I was about to follow Rodney jumped up on my leg with claws out. I yelled and batted him off, and he actually hissed at me!! The little brat had his tail puffed up and his ears laid back as though I were the most horrible person ever and was trying to kill his brother. Really, it was like he was trying to distract me so Colonel could get away. He was hissing and had his paw raised, so I grabbed the water bottle and started spraying him as much as I could to let him know that that behavior is not allowed.
I think we're at an impasse now, with both cats rather leery of me. Sheesh, I feel like I'm dealing with teenagers! And all this because Colonel went into the pantry he knows he's not allowed in and sat down behind me. For crying out loud!
