I watched the new BBC Sherlock last night.  Hmmmm.  Not sure if I like it or not.  I think it has a lot of strong points, but tremendous drawbacks as well.  I didn't hate it, but I'll reserve judgment until the next episode.

Things I liked:

I enjoyed Mrs. Hudson.  I thought she was perky and funny and sufficiently snarky enough to handle a tenet like Holmes.
The apartment was suitably old fashioned enough to perk up my little heart, and it had hints of the chemistry set and their chairs by the fire.  So that was definite plus.
Watson not being a doofus.  I can't stand the Jam!Watsons, and even though I'm sure Nigel Bruce was a lovely man, he condemned the character to idiot status for nearly 50 years.  This Watson, though not mustached, damnit, was pretty good.  He wasn't an idiot, and he didn't let Holmes bully him.  Also, he had that air of wonder and appreciation which I love in Canon Watson.
Lestrade.  I really liked him.  He was doing his best, knew he needed Holmes' help, and wasn't above using what was in his power to play Holmes like Holmes so often played him.

Things I disliked:

Sherlock as an asshole.  Yes, he's arrogant and rude and can be horrifically mean at times.  But he wasn't an out and out asshole, and I'm hoping this is only temporary.  Holmes bleating about how stupid everyone was got on my nerves.  Canon Holmes enjoyed his audience and loved how they couldn't follow.  He may have teased them and laughed about the police's stupidity behind their back, but he didn't consider them helpless morons.  Well, maybe one or two of them.
Watson didn't have a mustache.  Yes, dammit, it pissed me off!
Skinny Mycroft.  That's wrong on so many levels.
The bad guy.  The story was a pretty good twist on Study in Scarlet, but I thought the plot was pretty weak with the pills.  Holmes wasn't an idiot, and him willing to take the pill was sheer  stupidity, just because the guy talked him into it.  I hope the rest of the plots are stronger.
Holmes behavior towards women.  He was a misogynist, but he was always charming and never just downright hostile and rude.  That drove me nuts.
The female cop.  She was not only unproffessional but hostile and rude.  I hated her.  This is one thing I hate about Stephen Moffat, his women.  And yes, I hate, HATE HATE River Song.

Things I was okay with, but hope they improve:

The gay references.  I like how they're playing around with it, since I'm firmly of the belief that Holmes and Watson were deeply in love with each other, and ACD knew exactly what he was doing.  But they need to be careful not to make it mocking or have Watson throwing himself at every woman.  Ick.  Although I did like his reaction to Mycroft's assistant, and her total disregard of him.  Now if they just avoid the whole Mary thing, I'll be happy.
Holmes and his patches.  I don't care how politically incorrect it it, Holmes smoked a pipe.  I can understand their reasons for this, though, so I'm willing to see if it works.
Holmes' manic energy.  This could get away from them if they're not careful, but I liked it.  Also, I want to see him play violin.  Yuummm!

Agreed times x1000 on the female cop. I do not understand why Moffat seems to think that 'strong female character' = complete arsehole. Otherwise I love him, I just don't think he should be allowed to have female characters. Except Mrs. Hudson. She was awesome.

I didn't even notice Watson's lack of a moustache. And I was crushing on him so hard. Huh. Now I'm confused.

I LOVED the nicotine patches. Because it was hilarious.

LOL! I guess I could live with Watson not having a mustache, but it just seems wrong. I don't know, I'm still not 100% in love with the show, but it may grow on me. I did think it was kind of funny to watch Holmes and Lestrade commiserate on the patch.

And yes, Moffat can't seem to write women without making them complete bitches. Sally Sparrow was I think the one exception.

I wasn't sure about the concept of a modern SH, but intended to watch it anyway. Then I forgot, and watched it on Monday on iPlayer instead, which I think probably took away from the experience slightly but still, I really enjoyed it!

I agree with your views on Sherlock; I like him, but only because I feel like I am supposed to. Martin Freeman as Watson though (even without the moustache, which is a shame because I think he would look dashing with one!) was the perfect casting choice!

Ugh, the female policewoman. I'm with you about River Song as well - it seems like he tries too hard to make the women appear empowering and they just end up two dimensional and predictable.

Still, overall I really enjoyed the episode and I'm looking forward to next week. Maybe if Holmes plays the violin next week I'll grow to like him more :P

I did like Watson, I thought he was a very good update. But Holmes, I don't know, he felt off. I hope that it improves. I'm definately giving it another chance. I'm just not head over heals with it. Maybe watching it on the television instead of the computer will change my mind, lol.
