I really like my iPad. I have an iPhone, so it was an easy transition. However, I don't find it that comfortable for writing on. The keyboard is a little small for my fingers, so I end up half touch-typing, half hunt and pecking. It's harder to fend off the cats, as its size makes it less of a deterrent than the laptop. Also, I'm used to writing in Microsoft Word, so I'm writing instead in Notes or Google Docs, which are just different enough to be sorta annoying. So for email, internet, playing games, it's great, but I wouldn't recommend it for hard-core writing.
Or I may just need a little more time to adjust, and you may be a more flexible person than I am. But that's my experience.
I don't think I would be really comfortable with it. I've used my brother's iPad, and although it's kind of fun to play with, I don't think I would really use it as much as a Netbook. I think because I don't have an iPhone or anything like that, it would be too strange.
