What is our world coming to?

I've been watching the news, the past few months, and I just... I don't even know what to think.  It seems the country has regressed to pre-1960s in the issue of women's rights, and I'm amazed that there aren't throngs of women screaming at the top of their lungs to be heard in their outrage.

I mean - when politicians make it necessary to have unnecessary medical procedures, when men in government think it's their place to determine a woman's choices, I just want to cry.  What right do they have to determine what is best for me?  What right do they have over any part of my body?  Women are not property, no matter how many may wish to revert to that old common thought.

When issues of birth control can't even be discussed without fear of being called a slut or a prostitute, when people actually listen to this shit... I honestly just don't know anymore.

I was proud to be an American. I love my country, I do, but this frightens me, and I am honest to God embarrassed and horrified to be living in a country where this is even up for discussion. 

I may have been born with a uterus, but that does not make me breeding stock. 

What the ever loving fuck, people?

They are afraid. That's why they don't change anything. The US are hovering on the brim of a revolution. So they peck on the weak. As always.
Have you ever considered leaving America? Scandinavian is said to have almost managed equality in gender topics. Just a thought.

It is the men in power, but also, amazingly, a lot of women, too. It's just astonishing to me that any woman would willingly concede her rights over to a man to do with as he says.

I have thought of moving, but my family is here, and, despite it's flaws, I do love my country. I'm just really horrified by it now.

That's what vexes me, too. How a woman with a proper education gives herself over so willingly into a man's hand... Part it is the education system and part a kind of inherit low self-esteem...

I wouldn't do it, either :) But what can you do? Start your own movement? Fight fire with fire?

To be honest, I am GLAD the Conservative hypocrites have allowed their masks to slip. The more they hone in on such non-topics, and on things that most people thought were solved decades ago, like birth control, the less likely it is that they will maintain power.

Women VOTE. We vote in DROVES. And the majority of us are not very happy with these people-- I hope they keep it up, they will lose big time in November if this is the route they keep taking.

And OH do I ever want them to lose. I want them to take a drubbing.

This is true. The more they show their true nature, the more people are realizing what a big ass mistake they made in electing them. I can only hope that all these crazies are voted out of office in November.

Yup. Ditto. And I've said something similar on FB and on Livejournal several times now. I was born in 1971, into a country where my reproductive rights were pretty much secure. And it's terrifying, as a mother of a preteen daughter as well as a woman, that these random people who don't know us think that they have the right to decide who can have kids and how many and when. And that their version of a specific religion takes precedence over my civil rights. Not to mention the fact that they seem to see women as subhuman, and not deserving of respect. I'm a not just a reader with a good memory (A Handmaid's Tale, etc.) but a history teacher, and all too aware of how fast things can slide downward. Horrified and embarrassed, yes, I'll agree.

It's terrifying that these people keep getting voted into office, and that more women aren't aware of what's going on. And yes, it is scarily reminiscent of A Handmaid's Tale.

I think the most frightening thing is people's passivity. If people don't speak out now, if we don't fight, even though we shouldn't HAVE to, then I see bad things in our future.

I think women have forgotten how hard women had to fight for the rights we have now. I hope that this generation has the strength to fight as the previous ones did.

Yes, that's what scares me the most, too. People are blindly following along, and it won't be until all their rights are taken away that they wake up.
