I survived the first week!
Oct. 7th, 2012 08:37 pmHello, all!
Just wanted to let everyone know I survived the first week of the new job. It was a bit scary and there's a LOT to learn, but overall I really like it. I think I'm doing pretty well for never having worked in a doctor's office before. By the end of the week I was checking in patients by myself, doing the pre-registration stuff by myself, and I'm getting the lay of the surgery down. All in all, I don't think I did too bad, and I can totally tell the people I work with have never worked retail.
I had one customer who was obviously in pain and very grumpy. He swore about the paperwork I had him fill out and threw his insurance card and ID at me, to which I just said thank you, I understand it's a pain, but we do require this information. The girl I work with was like, "OMG, are you all right?" It took me a moment to realize she was really upset about the guy. I guess I'm thicker skinned than I thought! It didn't even bother me, since he was only really grumbling about the paperwork and I could tell he just wasn't feeling good.
Other than that, apparently there have been at least 3 cases of people coming to work for a week and then quitting. I had at least 7 people ask me if I was coming back on Monday. It was almost a comedy, the way people kept asking me.
I have my clothes picked out for tomorrow, my lunch is made, and I'm just going to read for a bit before bed. I'm all ready for the next week, and hope that it will be even better than the first.
Take care all, and I hope everyone's week is a good one!

Date: 2012-10-08 06:29 am (UTC)Over here: boring. Not much work to do. So I think I will sit and be searching for a job. *sighs* RL sucks!

Date: 2012-10-08 08:27 am (UTC)These people are surprised, because they haven't met someone who 'gets it' the way you do. You're already way ahead of the game.
Keep it up -- and keep us posted!

Date: 2012-10-08 02:15 pm (UTC)I think that you are going to enjoy this job. No job is really a "cakewalk", but in comparison to your last situation, this one will probably feel like one for a while! And it has to be nice to be appreciated by your new co-workers!
I really think that every single high school senior should have to spend at least 6 weeks working in either retail or fast food before they are allowed to graduate, just so they can learn what it's like to deal with the public and with people day after day! I also think every CEO of a big company should have to do the same before they get the job!

I totally agree with having to work retail. I live in a place where a lot of people go straight from high school to a government job, so they don't really have any experience dealing with the public. If everyone had to work on the lower end, especially the higher ups, I think the world would be a better place!
