A ficlet to ease my broken heart.

piploverIf I have to suffer, so do the characters. Just a ficlet. Not beta-ed since my beta just ran past with a horde of orcs on her tail.
A Cup of Tea
As long as Pippin had known him, Frodo's answer to life's woes was a cup of tea. When confined to bed as a child, Frodo had often sat beside him, regaling him with one tale or another as Pippin sipped the steaming mug in chilled hands. Despite sniffles and coughs, he cherished those times.
Later, when it felt as though his world had been shattered by his first heartache, Frodo had sat silently beside him, one arm around his shoulders. Pippin had known that the hot mug could warm cold hands, but he had not realized that it helped with chilled hearts as well.
On the quest, miserable with cold and too tired and aching to eat, Frodo would share his luke-warm tea with his baby cousin. Merry would join them, followed by Sam, and soon the four of them would sleep, if only for a little while.
After slaying the troll, Pippin became heartily weary of teas, especially given him by Aragorn. However, after Frodo and Sam had awakened, his only desire was to enjoy a warm mug with his friends.
When they returned to the Shire sans Frodo, Pippin hid himself away in his room in Crickhollow, and not even Merry's worry could lure him out. He sat huddled under a worn blanket, weeping softly into the steaming mug he held tightly in cold hands.
