Just a random thought that four hours of raking shook loose in my brain. Why did they name a decitant chocolate after a mushroom? I mean, how come they call that really good treat the same thing as a, well, mushroom? Maybe a hobbit came up with it.
Anyway, just a random thought.

It's a visual pun.

Truffles (the mushroom) grow underground, and come up covered with fine dusty soil. When truffles (chocolate) were first created they were almost always rolled in cocoa powder, which gave them the appearance of being covered in fine dusty soil.

That's the primary reason. Also, truffles (the mushrooms) are delicious and pricey. Confectioners wanted people to think of truffles (chocolate) as delicious and [therefore worth it even though they are] pricey.

Yeah.

You know, that is a most excellent question. It has plagued me for many years. Seriously. :)

Even though I love both mushrooms and chocolates, I have never had the fungal truffles (that sounds awful, actually...) But I have suddenly developed a craving (while typing this message) for the chocolate variety.

Mmmm... truffles... mmm...
