Be werry quiet, I be hiding!

Yay! I have managed to escape the field for a night, though I am covered in dust and sweaty from a long day of pounding in ground stakes and putting up equipment. I have the most fascinating blister on my ring finger, where I stupidly wore my engagement ring while doing the pounding. I didn't even think of it!
They just let us go a half hour ago, so I even had time to run to the store!
Now, however, I think I shall take a very hot shower and try and get clean, even though I have to go right back out there later tonight to pull watch. Oh, well. I actually like going to the field. Lack of sleep and horrible food (like soggy, cold eggs, and watery spagetti-like substances) bring everyone together, and we invent the most fascinating things to make the time go by. As well as being stupid and giggly with sleep depp, so anything we do seems fascinating. Lol!
Anyway, going to get clean and grab a few hours of sleep before heading back out.
Hugs!

Date: 2004-03-22 07:14 pm (UTC)I can remember sitting on watch with an M-16 and my Helmet etc. amid precipitation which couldn't decide if it was fog or rain coming across the fields in the wind and the only light from a streetlamp about a quarter of a mile down the way. I found tiny ripe strawberries in the grass, so I lay down to get a better look and I was collecting some in my otherwise useless fatigue cap when the raiders came swooping down out of the darkness, leaping right over our single coil of barbed wire (the guys who set up didn't want to waste things) and running past me without even noticing I was there. So I turned around and I shot them. (Blanks, of course.) We didn't have the laser tag rigs then, so they couldn't argue when the referee said they were both dead. Heh heh. One of my fondest memories. And the strawberries were lovely and sweet, even if I never did get the stains out of my cap.

Date: 2004-03-23 04:41 am (UTC)Our last field mission I had a broke foot, so wasn't able to do all the fun midnight road marches and such, and left to stand gaurd on the road the next day when everyone trooped off. The soldier with me, also broke, was helping me stay awake by talking, and right in the middle of her sentence shouted "Jockstrap!"
She had fallen asleep while talking, and had a dream in the matter of a few seconds. We couldn't stop laughing for an hour!

Date: 2004-03-23 05:41 am (UTC)I remember that state of mind. It was most... peculiar.
We had older guys in my unit who had been in 'Nam, and they could sleep anywhere, anytime, regardless of planes taking off overhead, or trucks being loaded all around them. It always took me a full two week deployment to be able to emulate them though.
