I started taking a Kung Fu class a few weeks ago, and I'm really enjoying it.  The people are really nice, the instructors cool.  And it's a really small class, so I don't feel like a total idiot.  However, tonight was only my third class and I had to skip out early because I'm pretty sure I tore something in my shoulder a few days ago.

I've done something similar, only to the opposite shoulder, when I was in Korea.  Since the base I was stationed at was so small they didn't even have an x-ray machine, the closest guess the doctor could come up with was that I had torn something.  It feels the same, so I'm going on that assumption.  I'm still going to try and get it looked at, but last time all they did was put it in a sling for a few days and gave me pain pills.  Well, I already have vicoden for my knee and back, so that pain pills are covered, and I don't think I need a sling.

My instructor looked at me like I was an idiot for even going to class, but I've been here before and was a lot more physical at the time.  I know how far I can push myself, but it's a total pain.  And I found out I don't even have any icy/hot, so I'm just going to sit with an ice bag on it, take some vicoden, and then take a hot bath and hope the combination works.

I swear, if it's not one body part, it's another!

If you have rice or dry beans (which I don't know if you do) then grab an old tube sock - clean would be nice - fill it with the beans or rice and knot it off. Throw it in the microwave for 45 seconds to a minute. You can go longer if you can stand it, but go in short burst or it'll get HOT. Voila, instant hot pack. Just don't get it wet or it will puff up and be all icky. Rice works well, flax seed works really well, but any dried bean will do.

If you don't have rice, the really ghetto (yet oddly effective) option needs 2 towels and some aluminum foil. Take the foil and fold yourself a pad about four to six layers thick and about 1/3 the size of your towel. Turn your oven on nice and hot (400 is usually good) and put the foil directly on the rack. Leave it for five to ten minutes. While the foil is heating, wet down one towel and wring it out well (damp). Throw it in the microwave for about a minute or two. Until it's good and hot. Then lay out the dry towel. Now, move quick and careful. An oven mitt will be handy. Lay the hot wet towel on the dry one and retrieve your oh-so-hot foil. Lay the foil on one side of the towels and fold over. Don't let the foil touch your skin! Voila, hot pad number 2.

I hope you feel better!

Thank you so much! I hadn't even thought of creating my own heating pad. It worked really well! I was little afraid to try your second idea, but the first one worked wonderfully!

The second one is definitely better seen first and repeated later. It's the one we always use when we're at boy scout camp because we have towels and foil. We don't usually have beans or rice.

I'm so glad it worked!

And just to cheer you up a bit. There's this artist named Brian Andreas who makes these things called Story People. They're odd little wooden sculptures with bits of stories on them. And I read this and I thought of you.

This Story Person is called "Body Shop."

Happy vicodin dreams!

Reminds me of when I was taking gymnastics (in my 20's). I think I sprained every body part I had... but still had fun.

Yeah, that's kind of how I feel. I'm having so much fun in the class, but as my friend put it, "You're just breakable. You need to stop that."

I swear, if it's not one body part, it's another! I sure know that feeling! I hope your shoulder is feeling a bit better today.
