Hello!  *Waves*

I have a quick question.  I don't really know what to wear on the airplane over to England.  I was thinking jeans and a long sleeved shirt, with a jacket just in case, but I'm not sure.  Any suggestions?  I'm still debating bringing my cane, but I think that may just be stubbornness on my part.  I know that I always have trouble after sitting still for a long period, even if it's just at the movie theater, but I hate walking with it!  Plus, I'm going to basically have to RUN to catch my connect to London from New York, since my flight lands at 9:45 and my connect departs at 10:30. MEEP!  Cutting it kind of close, airlines!

Anyway, taking all that into account, I don't want to look like a typical American yokal when I arrive in London, so any suggestions?

This is my wardrobe that I'm bringing so far, by the way:

Two sweaters
Two dresses, both light cotton and spring-ish
A skirt
Two tank tops
One blouse
One pair jeans
A black, very warm hoodie that's more dressier than it sounds

And of course underwear, socks and three pairs of shoes.  *looks shifty*  What?  I have boots with a 3 inch heel, a pair of black flats, and a pair of trainers for regular walking around.  I'm going to wear my brown flats on the plane, since I can slip those off and on easier than my trainers.  And yes, I must have one black and one brown pair.

Sooo.... Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I'd say go with comfortable. If the jeans are comfy and not too tight wear those. Also, shirt is good. Anything as long as it's comfy. I often wear a cotton or wool dress or long tunic and tights when flying. It's not too tight and still somewhat dressy.

The most important is to bring clothes you can combine with each other. That way yhou have lots of different outfits out of not all that many garments.

That's marvelous advice.

Thanks! The jeans are pretty loose, I have to pulling them up, lol, so they should be good for a long flight. Also, I think I'll layer, as if my luggage does get lost (knock on wood it doesn't) I'll have at least 3 outfits worth of what I have on me.

Having flown into London a couple of times myself: Heathrow airport is cold. Even in the middle of summer, it's cold. So I would certainly bring a jacket.

Thank you! I think I'll wear my nice, warm fleece and that way it's one less thing to pack.

The footwear sounds perfect to me, as does the rest of the clothes list.

Here's what I wore on my flight to LAX in the summer:

- jeans (comfy, slightly looser fitting)
- t-shirt
- zip-up hoodie
- thin cotton scarf

I reckon layering is what you need, and the scarf is good for keeping a draught off your neck (I often get a sore, stiff neck with draughts!). I really struggle with the A/C!

Oh, if you have a light rain coat or umbrella I'd recommend bringing it! I love England and its weather, and get very defensive when people claim that our weather is bad, but even I can admit that there's a high chance of rain on your trip!

Thank you! I will bring an umbrella, and I think I'll wear my black fleece rather than pack it. I can also wear a scarf, I never thought of that! Spring is hard enough to dress for, with it being warm one day and cold the next, let alone when you travel!

Just a suggestion -- if you have only 45 minutes to
catch a connecting flight to London, be prepared
to miss it. I'm not saying that you will, but the
majority of flights now are running late, especially
in and out of major airports. If it happens, don't
panic -- everyone else is in the same boat. I've
flown that route a lot and connecting is always the
place most likely to screw up. Also, if you are checking
your bag, keep soemthing to wear WITH you, as well as
anything else you can't live without. The last time
I went through JFK I didn't see my suitcase for five
days. Forewarned is forearmed.

Just to add --

England is cold this time of year -- cold and wet. Have
shoes and/or boots that are comfortable and can take
a soaking. Layer your clothes -- many places are not
heated and there's a reason the British live in their
tweeds!

Thank you! I am definitley rearanging what I packed so I can keep one outift in my carry on, and have all my meds and can't-live-withouts in the carry on, too. I hope I don't miss the flight, but if I do, I hopefully won't be thrown too much!

Wish me luck to connect on time and that my luggage arrives safely with me, lol!

I always tie the sleeves of a lightweight jacket around my waist when I travel. I find airplanes cold, and you never know what the weather will be when you land. I hope you have a terrific trip.

Thanks! Yes, I find airplanes cold, too. I think I'm going to wear my warm fleece rather than pack it, and that way I can stay warm or dress down if I'm hot.

Thank you! I love traveling, but it's kind of nerve wracking!

That sounds like it would all fit in a carryon. I'd suggest you take it that way rather than checking baggage if, like me, you're paranoid about losing your stuff. Wear something warm. I always find planes cold and tend to dress warmly when I travel, so I would definitely say jeans rather than a dress or skirt. Personally, I wouldn't take three pairs of shoes, but I don't tend to dress so that I would need them. Two, maybe, particularly if I was going to be hiking but also dressing up slightly. Always pack less than you think you'll need for clothing. There will be a laundromat or something so that you can wash stuff if necessary. Some hotels will have a laundry service, though it's likely to cost you. Airlines are also charging huge amounts for extra luggage or overweight luggage in an attempt to gouge travelers these days; traveling light will save you money in the long run.

Usually I do just travel with a carry on, because I've seen people have to deal with lost luggage and I hate the thought of my stuff lost. But I'm bringing a veritable gift basket from my mom to my sister with me, so that isn't really an option.

The shoes are another thing I usually wouldn't bring so many of, but because of the outfits, the shoes won't match, and my sister is one of those people who fashion counts a lot for, so I'm just kind of shrugging and going along with it.

My bag, however, does way a lot less than 50 pounds, so yay!

When I went to Scotland, I wore a jacket with lots of pockets so I wouldn't have to carry a purse as well as a carry-on. I just took the jacket off and slung the whole thing on the conveyor thingie at security, and put it back on after. And I kept not only my passport, but also all my ID and cards and cash on one of those "around the neck" passport holders.

I liked it so much that when I got home I just kept on using it till it wore out.

Ohhh, now there's an idea! I'll have to think about that, because I'm the kind of person who carries EVERYTHING in my purse, and have to keep reminding myself to empty it out of most things before I head off. But, it does make it a pain going through security!

I think I'll be wearing my warm fleece when I head over, that way I can take it off if warm and keep warm if cold. Also, I'm totally wearing my slip on shoes!
