My father passed away Monday morning. He died peacefully, with my mom by his side.

My sister had flown in on the 17th, and we were able to make some good final memories with him.

Unfortunately, he took a turn for the worse on Sunday, but my mom flew in that night and when he saw her, for the first time that day he showed recognition and actually spoke. They may have been divorced, but both of them loved each other very much still, and neither of them have remarried. As my mom said, he was her first love and her last.

We took my sister to the airport on Monday, and it seems he wanted to be alone with my mom, because he passed when we were away.

The hospice workers were amazing and treated him with dignity and respect the entire time, and their last honor was the Last March. They draped his body in a flag and we walked with him to the morgue, where a priest gave one final blessing.

I'm so thankful for all the support of everyone here. I didn't really have internet while I was in Florida, only sporadic access, and I probably won't be able to respond to all the well wishes. I'm just too tired and drained. But I can't tell you how much your support has meant to me.

Please take care everyone. I love you all.

*Hugs*

I'm so glad that you had the chance to see him again before he passed, and that it took place in quiet dignity.

Hospice workers are truly amazing people who deal every day with what most people don't want to even think about. I'm glad your father had such an understanding group.

I love you too, Pip, and I'm very glad you were able to see your father before he passed. I know your heart must be very empty and sad right now.

*tight hugs for you*

They may have been divorced, but both of them loved each other very much still

My parents are the same. They're both in their 80s, and live on opposite coasts, but are very good friends still.

*more hugs*

I am so sorry for the loss and simultaneously grateful that you had a peaceful and loving experience with hospice like that for him. Be gentle with yourself and remember that however you need to mourn and heal is the right way for you... *hugs back*

I'm so very sorry for your loss but it is heartening that you had some final moments with him and he was in such a lovely place where they took good care of him. Hospices are generally superb and the staff very kind - I'm glad you had that experience at such a difficult time. {{{Hugs}}}.

I have been thinking a lot about you and your Dad lately - yes, I'm not around much anymore, but I had read about your Dad being in a bad way. So sad to hear of his passing, but I'm glad that he went peacefully, he wasn't alone and you had a chance to see him before.

Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. *hugs*

Poor Pip. *hugs you* My condolences and take your time. I'm crying right now and I hope when my dad is going to die he will do so like yours: in peace and with his beloved around him. *sniffles*

I've not been in very good touch, Pip, and I'm so sorry to hear this, and the sadness and struggle of this whole long time. Losing a parent is unlike any other loss I've ever felt, bewildering, blank-feeling. Take good care of yourself and know I'm thinking of you. ::big hugs::
